Mixed-Use Multifamily Development

Mixed-Use Multifamily Development

Facade and material system explorations developed in collaboration with architect Alex Pettas (Studio APA) for a mixed-use multifamily project in Nashville.

The proposal organizes the building through a stratified composition articulated in three distinct layers, each defined by a specific spatial and material character.

The first layer forms a recessed base that accommodates service, retail, and support functions. Set back from the main facade plane, this base establishes a more human-scaled relationship with the street while visually lightening the upper volumes and reinforcing the building’s structural reading.

The second layer, clad in wood, introduces a more domestic and residential expression. Here, the facade is articulated through volumetric shifts and projected balconies that generate depth, shadow, and rhythm. The warm material palette enhances the perception of human scale and adds texture within the urban context.

The third layer, defined by a more restrained metal system, houses the premium units, including double-height residences. This upper volume reads as lighter and more contemporary, creating a clear transition between the domestic midsection and the skyline while establishing a defined architectural crown.

The facade is conceived as an active architectural system in which mass, void, and materiality construct identity, spatial depth, and differentiation within Nashville’s urban fabric.
